Thousands of French men and women are preparing to don the high-visibility vests for the country\u2019s fifth weekend<\/a> of\u00a0Gilets Jaunes<\/em> (Yellow Vest) protest.<\/h2>\n

The movement takes to the streets of France to protest against the rising cost of living, President Emmanuel Macron\u2019s progressive reforms, and other matters including against the UN migration compact.<\/p>\n

But it started<\/a> with one issue on Saturday November 17th \u2014 against fuel tax hikes, inspired by the Paris climate accord, which hurts the average Frenchman. Protesters took to the streets in their vests, blocking roads and highways for four weekends in a row.<\/p>\n

Since 2008, it has been law in France that all motorists have to carry high-visibility vests in their cars in case drivers have to get out of an immobilized vehicle. As Macron\u2019s carbon tax was directed to affect drivers, it became a fitting symbol \u2014 inexpensive, available, and every driver already had one.<\/p>\n

Breitbart London\u2019s Europe reporter Chris Tomlinson told Breitbart News Tonight\u2019s<\/em> Rebecca Mansour this week that the meaning behind the vest goes deeper than that, though.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the idea of putting on this high-visibility vest or jacket is to say to these elites, \u2018I am a human being and I am visible.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere is that much deeper, fundamental, \u2018we want to be heard,\u2019 \u2018our lives have value,\u2019 \u2018our lives are worth protesting for, are worth fighting for,\u2019 [aspect] and I think that is the core of what that really is,\u201d Tomlinson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople have called it a pure populist movement<\/a> and that is exactly what a populist movement is.<\/p>\n

\u201cA populist movement is regular people \u2014 regular working people \u2014 who have been forgotten by the establishment elite saying, \u2018look \u2014 I am here and I have value and you are going to listen,’\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
